Trigram Robot SUMO se lleva a cabo en un formato de equipo, y cada equipo consta de 2 estudiantes participantes y 1-2 profesores entrenadores. Hay dos categorías: primaria y secundaria. Los estudiantes participantes deben estar actualmente matriculados en la escuela primaria o secundaria el día de la competencia. La arena de competición es una plataforma circular con un diámetro de 2,8 metros. La plataforma está aproximadamente a 35 centímetros del suelo, y el área de inicio del robot tiene forma trapezoidal ubicada a 50 centímetros del borde. El área dentro de la línea de preparación hasta el borde de la plataforma es el área de inicio para los robots, con los robots de cada equipo colocados uno frente al otro en esta área.
